New Painting: Vernal Currents

abstract painting by Johnny Taylor featuring geometric shapes and bold colors

My latest painting, “Vernal Currents,” continues the style I’ve been working on for the past few years—a style that draws from the bold, simplified forms of mid-century illustration while incorporating elements of folk art traditions.

I still don’t have a perfect name for this approach. It borrows from the graphic sensibilities of Mary Blair’s Disney work, the stylized nature studies of Charley Harper, and the geometric patterns found in Wycinanki folk art. While “Geometric Abstraction” might be the most concise label, what really drives this work is the desire to distill natural forms down to their essential visual elements—to find the underlying patterns and rhythms that make landscapes feel alive.
